Simple they like to make people, specially woman feel special. There's nothing wrong if we do call someone, especially female friend "pet names" but of course with limited affection. I myself called people I know and care sweet thing but I do know not to over say my place if my friends esp. married men are. Respect first I have to them and they know I don't flirt with them because their wives are my close friends and treated them as my adopted families..
