I think men originally had circumcision because it was easier to keep clean. Keep in mind that people didn't take a bath/shower everyday like we often do now. It was common not to take bath for months or even years. Clean water was for drinking and cooking. This is especially true in the Middle East, where it is mostly desert environment.
