The main reason is the degradation of women in the media, through things like porn. Most men will treat you as well as you demand (take for truth, I am one) and if he doesn't, ditch him, he ain't worth it. A great quote I heard somehere (I'd give credit, but I forget who said it), If you want a man to look up to you, don't give him a reason to look down. Remember too, men find it more difficult to communicate there true feelings as well as women, so the men who look down on you might not actually look down on you, they could just be sending the wrong message.
