they combine with oxygen and form oxides. iron oxidizes into rust (iron III oxide) copper oxidizes, so does aluminum, so do most metals. some metals, such as gold and platinium oxidize to a much lesser extent, keeping them shiny.

What are two metals that tarnish quickley in air?

Silver and copper! both will oxidize noticably.

Name a disadvantage of ferrous metals?

They generally oxidize with exposure to the moisture in air, producing rust.

What do you mean by noble metals?

The noble metals are a group of metals that resist oxidation and corrosion in moist air. They are the opposite of the base metals, which more readily oxidize and corrode. Some of the noble metals are gold, platinum, and iridium. Aside from being corrosion resistant, they are also very expensive.

What metal burns in air but only reacts slowly in water?

It depends what you mean by slowly! Calcium burns in air and reacts fairly quietly with water, certainly much more slowly than the alkali metals do.

How metals change due to exposure to the air?

Some metals, namely iron, oxidize (that is the metal loses electrons) in the presence of air. This causes a chemical change to iron oxide, which is responsible for rusting.

Metals that grow dull when exposed to air are more than metals that remain shiny?

You seem to be missing a word there. I'm going to guess that you're looking for reactive. Metals that grow dull (or are oxidized) on contact with air are more reactive than metals that don't oxidize in air (or do so very slowly).

Why do metals often lose their shine and appear dull?

Most metals lose their luster when they are exposed to water because they react with the oxygen in the water and oxidize. An example is iron that reacts with the water to produce iron oxide, or rust.

Which Reaction is taking place when metals reacts slowly with air or water?

corrosion?

Why do coins oxidize?

Do bases oxidize in the air?

Bases aren't oxidized in air.

Can you use the word oxidize in a sentence?

Exposure to air caused the apple to oxidize and turn brown. He didn't want the metal to oxidize, so he applied a coat of primer.
