∙ 11y agoThe "mice eat cheese" myth started because people used to say: "You have to set the trap with cheese, if you like to catch a mouse." But cheese wasn't referred to as the dairy product. It was figuratively used in a monetary sense as cheese lasts long and you'll always find a bit left in the pantry. In German, for example the word bacon is used instead.
Later, when most rodents were eradicated from human houses, people still heard the elders refer to the saying. But they took it literally and had no chance to correct their beliefs through personal experience. This is how this myth ended up in the comics.
In fact, mice are herbivores and while they will eat everything, they prefer seeds and grains. If you read mouse trap instructions carefully, it says clearly to set the trap with peanut butter or bread. From personal experience I know that cheese doesn't work, while peanut butter does the trick.
