As for the USA, it is not the second-largest place where "Overseas Chinese" live. There are roughly 50 million Overseas Chinese with the largest populations in nearby Asian countries, such as Thailand (9.4 million), Indonesia (8.8 million), and Malaysia (7.0 million). The USA is a distant fourth at 3.8 million. The reason that the USA has a relatively large number of Overseas Chinese is due to Chinese Immigration, especially to San Francisco in the mid-1800s and around the country in the wake of the Communist Victory in the Chinese Civil War in 1949.
