Why do most earthquakes occur along tectonic plate boundaries?

Earthquakes occur when rock shifts in position on either side of
a fault. Tectonic plate boundaries are massive faults that extend
down to the asthenosphere.
Most earthquakes take place along tectonic plate boundaries because that is where most of the shift occurs.
