People are usually willing to educate themselves in areas that interest them, but only to the point of comfort. A fundamentalist Christian, for example, might make a cursory study of evolution, but would be unlikely to become an expert since a complete understanding of the science would likely cause an uncomfortable conflict with their core belief system.
In addition, many people feel comfortable with their level of education due to their other cultural circumstances. A person who works in a factory and associates with people whose interests are Bowling, football and hunting is unlikely to take a class in appreciation of Middle English literature. What would be the point?
Other people, who value knowledge for its own sake, are in the learning process for their entire lives, but even those specialize. The true Renaissance Woman or Man is, unfortunately, rare on the ground.
The important thing is that people be properly educated in the basics of many areas, so that they can at least consider issues with competence. That, however, is a function of the family and educational systems, and has clearly not been a priority (despite much lip-service) for the past several decades.
