I spent a year there. It's dirty, crowded, noisy, polluted. On the plus side, the metro is cheap and clean, food and most living expenses are cheap, there is plenty to do and visit, and the Mexican people are nice for the most part.

It is a matter of statistics: 21.16 million people live in greater Mexico City, and they roughly represent 18.6% or almost a fifth of the whole Mexican population. However, 92.56 million people live on the rest of the country.

It is like saying why do most people in the US live in the Boston-Washington megalopolis? Statistics dictate 49.6 million Americans, or a bit less than 16% of the population lives in such urban conglomerate.

Increasing industrialization and rural decline are the main factors. Also, Mexico City has been traditionally considered the political, economic and cultural capital of Mexico; as such, it attracts many people for its increased living standards and economic opportunities -- at least when compared against other less developed regions of Mexico. For instance, Mexico City has a GDP per capita of approximately US$22,470.

The straight answer is greater income and economic opportunities: Within a country with a GDP per capita of around USD 16,000, the metropolitan area of Mexico City has a GDP per capita of around USD 26,000. Within the city proper, income is even higher, with a GDP per capita of USD 47,400.
