- It is a myth that all mother in laws have a problem with their daughter-in-law. Some mothers do and it's because the mother is use to waiting hand and foot on her son and has probably catered to him on and off (called the 'empty nest syndrome.' Some mother in laws see their new daughter in law as a rival, but hopefully eventually with a little patience they will get along better. Try to be patient and if it continues then it's up to your husband to talk to his mother. Don't ignore her as she is part of the family, but make her understand that her son and yourself have a life together and need some privacy.
