Myths and legends are a symbolic representation of reality. They contain strong wisdom that humanity experiences. Myths also contain a certain context that might be compared to real life situations. Ancient myths contain Noah's Ark and Ulysses adventure, while new myths are books like Lord of the Rings. Therefore, myths and legends are important because they enlighten us about how to deal with life, and their effectiveness is proven by ancient myths but the new myths work just as well.

People belive in myths and legens because they were made to explained how things worked. For example Apollo was the sun god who drove the sun chariot across the sky. This was made to explain how the sun came up in the east and down in the west.

Well, one aspect of myths that cannot be denied is that they are ubiquitous across all countries and cultures. Every society has its own form of myths, and interestingly, often these different myths are re-tellings of central archetypal stories that are changed slightly to fit different cultures and experiences.

Mythology, like most religion, explains the unexplainable. Ancient people didn't understand basic concepts of science, so they needed to know why the dew appeared at night and disappeared in the morning, or why the sun traveled across the sky, or what made the earth shake and tremble. This is why most ancient deities are the personifcations of forces of nature, or intangible concepts like love, or war.

Myths and legends exist, maybe because they are passed down in generation to generation. They explain natural wonders and entertain people.

Whether or not they happened is less important than what myths and legends tell us about orselves. They serve as allegories and morality plays.

The Ancient people did not know about the sciences we do today, so they needed explanations as to why things happened, such as thunderstorms, day and night, war, ect.
