Desert nomads in Africa primarily rely on livestock such as camels, goats, and sheep for their food. They drink the milk and use the meat of these animals as a source of sustenance. They also gather and consume wild plants and roots when necessary, as well as trade for staple food items like grains, dates, and dried fruits with settled communities.
Nomads are like smart phones. Zuckerberg was not around to carry the message through facebook either. It is always wise to depend on wandering nomads as if they are wireless neworks, communicating between whoever they meet, sell camels to, make war with, its just common sense. Muhammad leading the nomads was done to spread the word. What we use today is just more complicated, and instant. Back then news got around a lot slower but news nevertheless.
There have been nomadic peoples since at least about 8500 BC. But nomads are definitely not ancient history. There are still many "pastoral" nomads who follow the herds they depend on. They may also tend the herds. There are nomads in Mongolia who herd camels, Inuits in the Arctic who follow the caribou, and desert and plains peoples in Africa. And there are many more. These days there are even RV nomads who camp in one place after another, never actually settling down. There is a lot of information in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nomads
Sudan is the largest country in Africa. It is about one-third the size of the continental United States. Nomads raise camels and goats in the north.
