Nomads are like smart phones. Zuckerberg was not around to carry the message through facebook either. It is always wise to depend on wandering nomads as if they are wireless neworks, communicating between whoever they meet, sell camels to, make war with, its just common sense. Muhammad leading the nomads was done to spread the word.
What we use today is just more complicated, and instant. Back then news got around a lot slower but news nevertheless.
