Well in a way, they're not, as you normally call an entire living thing auto- or heterotrophic. An example of an autotrophic organism (living thing) would be a green plant, which makes it's own sugar in its leaves by capturing sunlight. In general, an autotrophic organism is an organism that captures it's own energy rather than getting it from another living thing. Roots can't capture light, being in the dark. They provide the water and minerals while the leaves make sugar.
