Coal is used for energy because it is abundant and substantial amounts of energy can be released by buring it or something made from it, like coal oil or coal gas.

Large oil amounts,coal,gas and wood.
coal and gas
Coal gasification means to produce coal gas. It is a syngas or a mixture of carbon monoxide carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and water vapor. This can then be converted into automobile gas.
gas, oil and coal
gas because we have to burn coal or something to get gas and there's no unlimited coal therefore without that we can't produce it
Because they have only limited amounts of coal, and no oil or natural gas
Coal gas. Its composition varies, but in general it is made up largely of hydrogen and methane with small amounts of other hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide (a poisonous gas), carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. It is used as a fuel.
Coal has to be carefully burned to avoid releasing large amounts of waste gases, particularly sulfur compounds, that contribute to air pollution and acid rain. Oil is easier to burn cleanly, and natural gas is the least polluting of all fossil fuels. There have been programs to produce cleaner solid, liquid, and gas fuels from coal, but few have been widely developed.
Natural gas is cleaner than coal
