First of all, I don't think as a general statement that is true. Parents care about their children's opinion but we also can see the future (yes my child, experience is the world's greatest teacher) and there is a reason that children aren't allowed to live alone and require guardians - because you aren't born with sense dear one. A parent's job is to protect and teach their children. Maturity means being able to override impulses with good decisions. Children often just see what they want and haven't thought through or can't understand the consequences of doing/getting what they want. We as parents often have to make decisions that are unpopular with our children only because we feel it is the best and most appropriate thing for you. It's hard to understand why being allowed to stay up late will damage you, or how not allowing you the newest, latest gadget is going to teach you self-discipline. And sometimes, trying to explain these reasons to an upset child who doesn't understand is difficult and so parents respond with "because I said so".
