Pyrus is the botanical name for a popular group of deciduous trees that produce fruit known as 'Pears.' The English word 'Pear' derives from its botanical name Pyrus which is Latin. Most pears that we enjoy today are a species of a larger genus and are known as Pyrus Communis, also Latin. Bartlett, Bosc and Comice are examples of Pyrus Communis.
1655, Sir James Peare Pottson discovered ripe fruits in the top mountains of England. He described the fruit as green and similiar to the flavor of apples. The people of England were afraid to eat the fruit, for it was an unknown substance. But Sir Pottson ate the fruit, and died 2 weeks later. The British believed this to be a curse, but Pottson had cancer 5 years before his death in 1656. The British chose to name the fruit after Sir James Peare Pottson, taking his middle name Peare, shortening it to pear. They discovered the fruit was not "cursed" after 1668.
Like most English words "pear" has a history said to stretch back back to Latin. In Old English they were called pere, peru. That came from the Dutch peer. That in turn came from the Latin pirum. But the story doesn't stop there!
After many twists and turns we wind up at the Aramaic/Syriac "pirâ", meaning "fruit", from the verb "pra", meaning "to beget, multiply, bear fruit".

Cleveland pear trees are a cultivar of the Bradford pear tree, known for its strong, upright growth and profusion of white flowers in spring. Chanticleer pear trees, also known as Select flowering pear trees, are a smaller, more compact cultivar with a narrower canopy and glossy green leaves. Both trees are ornamental and produce showy white flowers in spring, but Cleveland pears tend to be larger and have a more spreading canopy compared to the more upright and dense growth habit of Chanticleer pears.
