Why do people answer a question when they have already been answered on answers.com?

There is a huge amount of questions on the site. So it isn't always possible to know that the question has already been answered. Questions asked with the exact same wording, will be merged into existing questions. If a new form of wording comes in, less experienced users may just answer it. Experienced users and supervisors will look to merge it. You could also ask why do people ask questions that have already been answered? In the same way, they don't know it has been asked already and if they use a new wording, they won't find the question, so they will think it is the first time it has been asked.

Yes, some people answer their own questions on the site. As long as a question is answered properly, any answer is valid no matter whether it was your question or not.

You type a question into the large text box where it says 'enter question or phrase'. Then WikiAnswers will check to see if the question has already been asked, if so you can read the answer. If not the question will be posted to the Internet and anybody can answer it. The answer time for questions can vary depending on the number of neeks (clever people with nothing better to do like me) online answering questions. It could be seconds or days. Unfortunately because loads of people ask stupid questions that waste people's time or ask questions that have already been answered the whole process is slowed down.

It all depends on the subject matter - and whether the question is placed in the correct category. Not all answers are inadequate. These questions are answered by the public, so some people could just say stupid answers but some are quite adequate
