Lourdes, France was the site of a Marian apparition in 1858 where the mother of God appeared to a poor peasant girl named Bernadette Soubirous. The apparition was approved as authentic by the Catholic Church and has become one of the most popular Catholic pilgrimages. During one of the apparitions, Bernadette claimed she was prompted by the mother of God to draw water and so she went to the nearby stream to do so. She was told to draw it right where she was, and so Bernadette dug into the ground and a small spring came forth. Some people who attended these apparitions were moved by devotion to use the water on their own ailments, brought it to the sick and the dying. Consumption and even the touch of the water had astounding properties, curing things such as cancer, restoring sight, restoring life, etc. The water was deemed miraculous. The spring still exists to this day and miracles that are beyond medical explanation still transpire. This is why people go there to be healed, for they believe God has attached miraculous blessings to the water as proof that His mother appeared there and so that we pay attention to her message. Any true apparition is accompanied by such public signs, some transitory, some permanent. God always operates in this way, as Christ did miracles before His teachings as a divine seal so that people would take what He said as true.
The Catholic Church has approved the Marian Apparitions of Lourdes and has verified countless miracles there after having submitted them to outside medical and scientific analysis as well as her own experts.
