People bring food as a gesture of caring because they know that when you are grieving and dealing with the funeral preparations, the last thing on your mind is the making and consumption of food. They want to make sure you don't forget to eat, so they bring something that you don't have to make for yourself.

The reason is that when this happens, you are so busy with the final arrangements and contacting family members, etc., you barely have time to eat let alone prepare anything, so friends and neighbors bring things by so that's one less thing you have to worry about while you deal with more important matters.
