I think it is a gesture of familiarity and friendship. It creates a bond. Afterall, you wouldn't create a nickname for someone you don't really care about or know pretty well. Both the person who makes up the nickname and the person with the nickname feel special. On some level, the nickname is a a connection between the two that is unique.
