There are several reasons. Yes, they are killing the trees, and that is wrong, and occasionally it is for selfish reasons. But they often need the trees. A lot of our economy depends on trees. For example, paper. Money is made out of paper, so we need that. And our furniture. Where would we be without furniture made of the wood that comes from trees? People could argue that there are alternatives, and yes, there are, but they would be much more expensive, and finding and making these alternatives would probably create a lot of greenhouse gases so it would be worse for the environment. Also, the land is often needed for businesses, but there are ways to resolve this problem. For example, one company needed to build their building in the middle of a wooded area, so they chopped the trees and built their building, but then they created a garden on the roof to replace the area of trees they'd knocked down to create a simple solution which would also raise the morale of their workers. Everybody won from their decision.
