There are 2 primary factors:

1. Hypothermia. They freeze to death.

2. They get lost. This can also lead to #1.

A contributing problem is that one of the things that happens during hypothermia is confusion. Even if you can see where you are going, you may become easily disoriented or exercise very poor judgment (one of the symptoms of advanced hypothermia is feeling hot, which makes people take off their clothes and freeze to death even faster).

Any number of reasons, things falling over, accidents, things falling on people, and most common; hypothermia.
