In preindustrial, tribal or village based societies, marriage was an incredibly important element and could potential effect an entire family for the better or the worse both economically and socially. Marriage was a way to forge family ties which in those times often meant forging business relationships (primarily agriculture), social relationships or status (in the Caste System), and even religious or political relationships. Parents felt children were not smart enough yet to make such a significant decision on their own, so they would work very hard to arrange the perfect marriage that would benefit their child and their family. In certain societies around the world that have industrialized only recently, or still have a strong tribal or traditional culture, this practice has remained.
