The question assumes that God exists, which is not a unanimous view.
But we use the gifts that mark a Bountiful.
Why does he forget?
Answer:
1) Inertia; habit. As babies, we weren't yet aware of the true Source of all that we enjoy. As we grow up, we may not yet have changed our earlier flawed attitude.
2) Laziness. Thought requires effort.
3) The Epicurean/atheistic notion, promoted all around us, that the physical universe is all that there is.
4) Our peers. One who praises God might be subject to mocking.
5) Ego. We instinctively think that we deserve what we have and much more. Thanking God implicitly means that we owe Him.
6) Everything can be twisted into a complaint. The food is imperfect, our body has its minor aches, the children are a bother, and so on.
