Resentment -- the opposite of forgiveness -- is like drinking poison and then waiting for the other person to die. Forgiveness is for you, not the other party. It allows you to move beyond that nasty feeling in your gut and live freely.

If you accidentally spilled milk on the brand new rug, wouldn't you wish to be forgiven? It wouldn't be a happy ending knowing that because of the accident you would be forever kept in jail. That is why people forgive.
