Feelings are a chemical response in our brain, to stimuli. The most important for survival is the fight or flight response, and it surely developed through evolution to keep us alive. As we developed higher cognitive functions feelings developed as a feedback to let us know how we are doing. When we are unhappy it means we need to change something, etc. We are pack animals, so love is important to us so that we feel safe and accepted.
People that do not have feelings tend to have dissociative problems where they are not able to relate to other people, and then do not tend to fair well in the world. Feelings are a necessary part of integrating in our society. Feelings are also a way for us to know what we need to work on within ourselves. Where we have fears, we have memories we need to face. Where we have pain, we have trauma we need to work through. We are a species that has feelings to inform us about ourselves, and to relate to others around us.
