The Jewish tradition is that the groom steps on a wine glass just after performing the wedding vows. Since Jewish women are very "assertive" (essentially the bosses in the family), it is very difficult for the man to "put his foot down." I know; I'm one of them!

Who breaks the glass at a Jewish wedding?

The groom breaks the glass under his foot, to end the public wedding ceremony and signify its finality. The traditional practice of breaking of a wine glass during a Jewish wedding has taken place for more than two thousand years. Its origin is stated in the Talmud (Berakhot 31a; Tosfot commentary). One reason for this practice is that while a wedding is a joyous occasion to be celebrated, we should not overdo it (Talmud, ibid) or forget those things that are to be mourned - such as the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Another explanation is that the glass represents the fragile nature of reality and serves as a reminder that we must try to spiritually repair the world and work to keep the marriage a happy and intact union. There are other interpretations too. According to many Polish Jews, the glass is broken to remind both bride and groom that this should be the only wedding either of them has. Since the bride and groom take sips of wine during the Jewish public wedding ceremony, it is said that the glass is then broken to assure that neither party would use it ever again. It is also said, only partially in jest, that it's so the groom remembers it's the very last time he gets to put his foot down.

Are the parents of the bride or groom expected to pay for the wedding?

Traditionally, the bride's parents have paid for the wedding, but this is much less adhered to nowadays. It is quite OK for both sets of parents to contribute if a mutual arrangement is reached, or for the bride and groom to foot or partially foot the bill.

Which foot do you walk down the wedding aisle with first Left or right?

Right side. The groom will be standing facing the father on his left. It is then common practice for the father to place the brides arm into the grooms arm ... 'passing the watch' so to speak, insuring that the bride will be well taken care of as her father did for all the years leading up to matrimony.
