They say 'Those who play with fire will get burned.'

So, logically, in order to work with fire on a daily basis, you must actually be a few degrees hotter than fire itself.

Very few people possess this trait- those who do, have the potential to be firemen.

In fact, don't even bother applying to be a fireman if you aren't at least 1300 degrees Fahrenheit (704.4 degrees celsius). The fire dept may give you a reasonable 'justifiable' excuse as to why you weren't hired.

But trust me, You just aren't hot enough.

Firefighters play a large role in the community, as well as saving lives in the community. Firefighters don't just go spray water on fires, they do a various range of things including:
  • Public events. It is not uncommon to see firefighters out at public events, career day at schools, parades, etc.
  • Medical responses. Most of the time when you call for medical emergencies, the first ones you will see there are firefighters. This will vary by country and location.
  • Putting out fires. As mentioned earlier.
  • Vehicle Accidents. You will commonly see firefighters at vehicle accidents, and in most places they carry equipment specialized for vehicle accidents (Ie: Jaws of life, "Spreaders", and equipment in-case the vehicle might catch fire). Sometimes a special rescue crew will carry the equipment instead, but firefighters are commonly sent with them.
  • Specialized rescues. Many firefighters will assist in finding lost people, water rescues (Rivers, Lakes, etc.). They commonly will just work with and assist a specialized rescue team.

And over 70% of firefighters are volunteers, meaning they are just your average person, except they do all of the above on a regular basis for free.
