About the latter, the general idea is that the more primitive people are, the more they're likely to measure everything in society by status, making it natural to try and gain as much of this "resource" as possible. Brands carry certain influence, so the easiest primitive way to get or show high status (as a social rank) is to use (wear, eat, drive, etc) brand name products, which includes shoes.

Due to aggressive advertising campaigns, many people feel like there is some major difference between brand name shoes and generic ones. The reality is that there is not much difference between a generic and brand name shoe.
People feel that if they are wearing brand named clothes that they are richer or have more style. I personally only buy brand named clothes because they fit me better. Most shapes of the jeans at like abercrombie and places like that, are for tall skinny people like me. Generic clothing is usually for chubbier people or for people of different sizes.
