Because God commands it, it is the 4th commandment. The reasons for keeping Shabbat (sabbath) are to affirm the faith God created the world and redeemed the Jews from Egypt.

It is important to realize that the Sabbath was not just for the Jews, but for all mankind. The Sabbath was established at creation (Genesis 2:1-3). Jesus called all to worship God, and to keep his commandments; it is a universal calling (Revelation 14:6,7).
