∙ 13y agoTar (actually asphalt) is used to waterproof it and gravel is added as ballast or weight to keep the roof from lifting in high wind.
The gravel also serves to dissipate heat from the sun evenly to avoid a Hot Spot causing the tar to melt and run. In extreme UV environments [Lot of Sun] the roofs are usually coated white to cool and reflect the rays!
