"Old is gold" also suggests that older people are likely to be more reliable than younger people. You can depend on old people; they are slow to anger and quick to reason. Some old, but still gold examples: Old friends; old ideas that have been used before; old ways of doing things; the "good old days"; experienced people; knowledge; education; established & settled citizens; someone who has been through a particular crisis before.
This proverb seems to have gained a lot of currency in colonial India [present-day India and Pakistan].
