"Old is gold" is a proverb that reminds us that old things are valuable, or that old items MAY be very valuable. As opposed to always choosing he newest fad. "Old is gold" also suggests that older people are likely to be more reliable than younger people. You can depend on old people; they are slow to anger and quick to reason. Some old, but still gold examples: Old friends; old ideas that have been used before; old ways of doing things; the "good old days"; experienced people; knowledge; education; established & settled citizens; someone who has been through a particular crisis before.
This proverb seems to have gained a lot of currency in colonial India [present-day India and Pakistan].

Of course, stamping "14k" or "22k" or "pure gold" for that matter on a piece of metal does not make it gold. Passing some inferior metal off as gold is an old old piece of fraudelent trickery.
