Yeah, I don't really get that either. Romeo and Juliet are sort of like who couples want to be like (I don't get WHY but they do) It's probably because Romeo and Juliet really loved each other enough to die for one and other so when a couple is really in love people say that.
People often refer to themselves as being like Romeo and Juliet because they associate the story with intense love and tragic circumstances. Despite the tragic ending, the couple's love is seen as passionate and romantic, making it a romanticized symbol.
