It provides a source of water for irrigation. In the last year or so this has become a problem because the drought has significantly lowered the river's level leaving many unable to pump from it. At the lower end, salinity has risen sharply and soils are turning acid-sulphate meaning the attraction of settling near the Murray has dimmed for many people.
