Why do some people think that Kreteks are a safe alternative for cigarettes?

Kreteks, also known as clove cigarettes are thought to be a safe alternative to regular cigarettes. In truth, kreteks are an Indonesian cigarette made from cloves, tobacco and other ingredients and are no safer than regular cigarettes. These and other types of alternative cigarettes have as many toxins as regular tobacco products.

Do clove cigarettes have nicotine?

Yes. Clove cigarettes are made with tobacco, like normal cigarettes, often mixed with minced clove buds. The tobacco blend is then treated with a proprietary compound (which includes clove oil) to give them their distinctive taste. In many brands, after the cigarette is rolled, the paper is treated with a compound that may include saccharine to give the paper it's distinctive sweet flavor. (Just the end of the filter in Djarum Blacks & some others, while in other kretek's, the entire cigarette is treated.) They have tar, nicotine, and other harmful elements just like any other cigarette. Tests indicate that the levels of tar and nicotine is comparable to that found in a 'normal' full flavor cigarette made in the US.

Which cigarette brands were used by GI's in the Vietnam war?

All brands of cigarettes were available in Vietnam although, for some reason, menthol brands were sometimes in short supply. In the early part of the war C rations left over from WW2 were distributed to the troops. Included with the C rations was a package that would contain a variety of items, including cigarettes. I remember smoking Lucky Strikes that were manufactured before I was born. The familiar red circle was wartime green - I believe because the red dye was needed for other wartime uses.

Is bugler pure tobacco with no added nicotine or chemicals?

No, it has additives just like any other cig. Some old people swear that "the filters kill ya." Only cigs that claim to be all natural are non additive cigs (such as Winston non additives or any American spirit). [While Natural American Spirit cigarettes claim to be natural and organic tobacco, the tobacco is organic but the cigarettes still have many of the same additives as other tobaccos, such as vinyl acetate, which is used in the papers to make them "Fire Safe Compliant"]
