The Five Precepts of Buddhism suggest that a person should refrain from:

  • harming sentient living things.
  • taking what is not given.
  • sexual misconduct.
  • lying or gossip.
  • taking intoxicating substances such as drugs or drink.

Stripping out all reliance on "divine inspiration" or "moral correctness" these suggestions are aimed at reducing the internal disquiet or suffering in a person's life. This is inherently the goal in life identified by the Four Noble Truths. If one of the precepts had been "Do not pick up soldering irons by the hot end with your bare hand!" no one would ask "Why would a person follow this rule if there is no god to enforce it?". The rule provides a method of acting that would reduce the potential for pain (desirable) without external punishment (divine retribution). Not following the rule has its own intrinsic painful result. All of the Five Precepts carry this same instantaneous and self imposed "Ouch!" factor. No god is needed.

People follow the five precepts because they believe following them is morally right. They do not need any sor of god to tell them so.
