Most people take advantage of those in crisis because they are the most vulnerable. Their emotions can be easily manipulated, and because of their emotional state people can usually get them to aid them. When people aer in crisis, they are usually feel that things are out of their control and when asked to do something for someone else, a void can be fed because they are partially in control of someone elses life, even for just a moment. That sense of false control gives them more confidence to overcome their challenges, but it can also destroy them for the worse.
