Maybe because they want to build something for there gods. But they distorted the reals Gods Tempel but God will come back when it is built.

I am not Muslim, so my answer will likely be incomplete.

The Prophet Muhammed traveled, one night, from his home in Medina to Jerusalem, on the back of a winged horse.

While in Jerusalem, he ascended into heaven, where he spoke to Allah, and saw many of the prophets. The large boulder that he ascended from is the 'rock' in the story.

There is an indentation in the rock where Muhammed put his hand as he told the rock that it could not ascend to heaven with him.

Anyway, Muhammed returned to earth that night, and on to his home.

The Dome of the Rock is a very large, very beautiful mosque built over the rock, to commemorate its importance to the religion of Islam.

In photos of Jerusalem, it is the large, gold dome.

Incidentally, in Jewish and Christian tradition, the 'rock' that served as an altar where Abraham almost sacrificed his son Isaac to God, is the same rock.
