Plants need chloroplasts to absorb light and use it in conjunction with water and carbon dioxide to produce sugars, the raw material for energy production in all green plants. Animals cannot do that. It is where photosynthesis takes place. there they produce energy (ATP), they reduce NADP to NADPH through a complex set of processes.
