It depends, if its the cold dark then it will be on the right track to dying, but depending on the type of plant, lets say a bean plant or pea plant, leaving it in normal dark with no sunlight or rain, suprisingly it would spurt a lot quicker then if you had bean plants outside.

Most plants would die. They require sunlight for photosynthesis, and without sunlight, they wouldn't be able to produce food for themselves.

There are some that *might* be able to survive if the conditions were right though. Not all plants use photosynthesis for food - some are parasites, and if the host plant was present (and light so it could survive - this would mean having the parasite in a box or something so only it got no light) the parasite plant might still be able to live. Other plants are saprophytes, meaning they only live on decaying matter. If they had the decaying matter they needed, they could live without light.

There are also two kinds of orchids that grow completely underground, so these might survive, to.

So I guess it would depend on which plant you put in the dark.

In the dark for a short time and it will be OK, however if you put in the dark permanently, it will die because plants need light (and water and air) to make their food.

Why do plants grow the best in dark lights?

They don't. Plants need the light, sunlight, to get photosynthesis to grow and not die.

Can plant grow in the dark?

No, because they need sunlight to grow or they will probably die.

In the dark plants cannot?

In the dark plants cannot photosynthesize.

What will happen to plants placed inside the house for a long time?

If it does not get enough proper light, it may die because of the absence of sunlight. Water is not enough for plants to live on, since sunlight serves as the energy source for photosynthesis.

Does plants start to loose water if kept in dark?

A plant will lose water less quickly in the dark than it will in bright sunshine or heat, however it will still lose some water. So if you are thinking of going away and hoping that leaving your pot plants in the dark will mean you don't need to water them, then it won't work. The other problem is that plants need light to stay alive, and they would suffer and die if you leave them in the dark for too long. Hope this helps

what are the differences between two plants when one is kept in dark place and other outside?

The plant placed in dark will not carry out photosynthesis whereas the plant placed in light will carry out photosynthesis. if the conditions are kept constant for a long time then the plant placed in dark will wilt and die whereas the plant placed in light will continue to survive.

If the plant is placed inside a dark cupboard what will happen to the plant?

Eventually, it would die due to 'starvation'.

Why do plants grow taller in the dark?

plants grow taller in the dark because plant will grow until they find light, but will eventually die.

Can plants germinate without sunlight?

Yes. Tried this experiment and the plants in the dark germinate and grew faster than the plants in the sunlight. But, if you leave it in the dark for too long, its leaves would turn yellow from the lack of chlorophyll and the plants would eventually die. (I tried with green bean plants, so not sure if other plants can) By the way, you will have to make sure that the plants in the dark have enough air and water, if not it will probably die before germinating.

What happens to a plant in a dark room?

Plants in the dark receive no light and the plants need the light. They grow because the production of growth hormones is stimulated by the dark/suppressed by sunlight. This is why plants in the dark grow much more than plants in the light. (They will turn yellow because they are not receiving enough sunlight to produce chlorophyll to make the plant green. They will become unhealthy and eventually die.) It is also why plants in a sunny window "lean" toward the light. The side of the plant that is in the shade is producing more growth hormones.
