Flowers are the (sexual) reproductive organs of the plant, housing the male and female reproductive organs of the plant. Sometimes both male and female parts are house in the same flower, in other instances there are seperate male and female flowers on the same plant, and in other instances seprate male and female plants.

The purpose of the flower is to attract polinators (insects, bats, animals etc.) to effect pollination - that is the movement of male pollen grains to the female sigma. Here the pollen grains germinate and eventually fuse with a female ovule which then develops into an embryo. The embryo then develops into a seed (above process is simplified!).

Flowers produce chemicals which emanate into the air, some scientists think it help attract pollinating insects and even food for some, but be aware much of the information is conjecture, there is very little information on this subject, at best it sounds reasonable.

I asked this question out loud to my wife almost making fun of it, and my two year old daughter answered me. She said flowers are beautiful "because they have to be beautiful."

In actuality flowers come in pretty shapes and colors to attract the birds and bugs that are required to pollinate them. If flowers were too plain to be noticed then they would not be able to survive as well. It's natural selection.
