Cause if they didn't we wouldn't have any food.When the plants photosynthesis then they make sugar.Which then gets passed down to a herbivore/consumer which eats it.Then the food is in it then it continues.If there was no photosynthesis then there wouldn't be any food.But if you say,"What if animals just eat other animals then they live."No because there is no energy in the animal then if the consumer eats the animal then it won't live that long cause there is no energy.Hope this helps.
