The crazed people who would kill the President have various reasons. Some want the government to fall and think that killing its head will speed the process. Some want to feel important, to think they have accomplished a notable deed. Some have a grudge against the President or the government and want to make a point.
In the case of US presidents, there is no particular pattern in the reasons for the assassinations. In the case of Lincoln and McKinley , both killers wanted the president out of the way, but for quite different reasons. In the case of Garfield, the killer wanted to get revenge or make a statement that would be heard. As for Kennedy ,nobody knows for sure, but the best guess is that the killer wanted to be famous. The man who almost killed Reagan wanted to get attention and impress a movie star he had a crush on.
In general , so-called "presidents" in foreign countries get assassinated because they are strong men- dictators, and do not hold free elections that might peacefully remove them from office, or else the killers are insane, religious fanatics or high on hashish.
