The liturgical color for Advent is called Violet, not purple. Of the four Sundays preceding Christmas, the priests in the Catholic Church wear violet the first two weeks, Rose (which looks like hot pink) MAY be substituted on the third Sunday, and violet again on the fourth Sunday. The violet has two meanings, which are woven together in the Gospel of Mark during the passion. The first is royalty, and the second represents suffering and penance as it is the same color of the garment that Jesus was dressed with by the Roman guards when he was crowned (royalty) with the crown of thorns (suffering) (Mark 15:17). So as the Church reflects on the coming of Christ it is penitential, but hopeful, which brings us to the Rose color, representing Joy, as we rejoice that the savior is coming. Regarding the white and red, I suspect the priest may have been speaking figuratively of the purity of Christ (white) and the blood he spilled (red) in the sacrifice on the cross, which were both essential elements of the crucifixion. It is also possible there may also been some confusion of him speaking of the Rose color, not the violet as they both liturgical colors of advent. -
