They must remain home for at least two months in order to develop properly, both physically and emotinally, before they are transferred to a new and potentially disorienting environment. Puppies learn many things from their families, including how to socialize with other dogs and understand the behavioral cues other dogs send them. Failure to allow a pup to socialize properly with his or her family could result in a mouthy, nervous animal that interacts poorly with other dogs. Also, the new owner will want to be sure that their puppy has had her initial round of shots and is strong enough to move to a new home. In addition, the "window of opportunity" between 8 and 12 weeks is when a puppy is developing her personality and is most open to learning new information. A new owner will want to take advantage of this precious time period to accustom the pup to a new home and unfamiliar circumstances.
