Why do ring-necked pheasants change colors in the summer and the winter?

it is a natural self defense mechanism of the ring-necked pheasant to change color according to the season . In its natural habitat the surroundings(the grass, leaves etc...) change color with the seasons(summer-orangish red and winter-white). The bird sheds its feathers after each season and grow new feathers with different colors so that it could camouflage with the new surroundings to protect it from predators. However this phenomenon may not take place if the bird is taken to another place with different climatic conditions as it may be able to camouflage itself in the new surroundings without changing color.
