Most killers that can kill over and over are most likely suffering from a personality disorder such as APD (anti-social personality disorder) or narssissitic personality. Simply put they are the center of the universe and anyone else is insignificant. Most of these types of murders have sexual connetations but they are not about sex. They are about power.
Ted Bundy is a good example. The rape for him was secondary. Of his own admission he loved the powerful feeling watching the light go out of the victims' eyes as he strangled her. This is a common theme with serial killers. The same principle applies for serial rapists. Although there is sex involved, it really is not about sex.
People that study these types of crimes have never been able to agree 100% on the factors that make a serial killer. Some come from abusive situations, some do not. Some experts think serious head injuries may contribute to some degree. Others say genes are the cause. There may never be one cause or explaination for these crimes and the people that commit them.
Unlike other types of murder, such as crimes of passion, serial killers derive pleasure from violence. The more brutal, the better they like it. Crimes of passion are quick and carried out with whatever murder weapon is handy and lacks premeditation and forethought. Murder for hire is planned and premeditated but is usually done quickly and many times at a distance by an univolved third party. Serial murder can have aspects of the random and/or premeditation, depending on the circumstances and the individual killer involved. This is known as organized and unorganized characteristics. But the serial killer loves brutality.
They usually don't. Serial killers in most cases choose strangers to kill which is one of the reasons they are hard to catch. If there is no connection between killer and victim it is extremely difficult to solve the crime.
What seems motiveless killing to the general population, to the killer it makes perfect sense. There is much still unknown about these types of killers but the hunt for them has been made easier thanks to advances in forensic science. Once in custody they can be studied and hopefully someday prevent the destruction of human lives which includes the victims, their family and friends and society as a whole.
The majority of serial killings have sexual connotations. But to the killer the actual murder itself is many times incidental. The power and control the killer has over his victims is the fundamental need the killer is trying to meet. After a murder the killer has what is known as a 'cooling off' period, a time of relative calm before the urge to kill begins again. Virtually all serial killers have violent fantasies. When fantasy is no longer satisfying, the search for a new victim begins. This cycle is repeated over and over, and many times the crimes become more savage and violent. The escalation is seen as shorter 'cooling off' periods, victim's bodies suffer overkill and the killer may begin to make mistakes that will one day result in his capture.
Although there are several physiological factors involved in serial killers and their motives and actions, including vengeance and sexual desires, a serial killer may dismember their victim to make their crime easier to hide. Several killers have also made this their "trademark."
No one knows for sure. Some experts believe it's a genetic thing in humans, which cause some people to kill. In a lot of cases, it seems to be done as a sexual thing.

To the Contrary - 1992 Women Serial Killers 8-4 was released on: USA: 16 April 1999
Serial means a series of crimes, usually one at a time, with a 'cooling off' period in between kills. The cooling off time depends on the individual killer. Jack The Ripper killed two women in the space of an hour. Some killers may not kill again for several years.
Although not as plentiful as male serial killers, history shows that women are not immune to killing in numbers. The biggest difference in men and women serial killers is the how and why of their crimes. Male serial killers are a whole different animal and are driven by completely different forces. For men its about control, sex, control. They are usually driven by strong violent fantasies. And they are usually strangers or near strangers to the victims. Women serial killers are most likely to kill someone they know. Nurses kill their patients for varying reasons. They kill relatives for monetary gain. This is not the complete list but it gives a good idea of how a woman kills. They are big on poison, too. Then there are the women, rare though they are, that kill their children. Not Andrea Yates, the Texas housewife that drowned her 5 small children in their bathtub. The women that suffer from Muchausen's by Proxy. These women kill their own children for the attention it brings them. Although Aileen Wuornos has been touted as the first female serial killer, she was far from it. What made Wuornos non-typical was she killed men she did not know. But it was about monetary gain. So except for the stranger/victims she was more typical than people realize. They had what she wanted/needed so she took it. (money, car) These are just examples, and of course there are always exceptions to the rules but this gives a good idea of women killers.
Well, that's a good question. Why does anyone kill? There are plenty of theories, but barely any of them cover the motives of convicted serial killers. There are many theories as to why serial killers do what they do (avatism, lust, insanity, etc) but nothing can give us a complete and straight answer.
