The plaque from the smoke collect in the lungs and make the cilia un-able to move. (The cilia move viruses and mucous out of the lungs.) With them being disabled, it is harder to cough out the mucous prolonging the infection or causing a cold by being un-able to move mucous that hold viruses.

Constant irritation of the mucous membranes and suppression of body defenses make it easier for bacteria and viruses to enter the body. The constant touching of the mouth and face can also lead to the transmission of microorganisms from environmental surfaces.

In addition to the above, smoking itself causes a variety of diseases including several forms of cancer, degenerative lung disorders such as COPD and emphysema, and heart and vascular damage.

Why it is difficult to produce immunity to common cold?

It's difficult to produce immunity to a common cold because the common cold is not one virus - it is over 700 viruses at last count. Rarely are more than 200 local to any particular area, but that is still, in effect, 200 different colds you can catch. Children tend to get the most colds, as all colds viruses are "new" to them. The amount of colds a person gets as they get older tends to decline, for that same reason - they've already had most of the indigenous colds viruses.
