so they can see better
To help them move over hot surfaces.
Snakes dont have eyelids. They havean immobile, transparent scale over their eyes instead.
Not their entire eyes - but ... There is a transparent, protective covering over the snakes eyes - called the 'brille' It is discarded with the old skin each time the snake sheds - as it develops a new one with the creation of the new skin
Possibly - When snakes shed, their eyes cloud over making it hard for them to see - therefore they get defensive and more aggressive.
No snakes have eyelids as such. They have a clear membrane over the eyeball called the 'Brille' - it is discarded each time the snake sheds, and a new one is formed with the new skin. See related link for a better description.
Fiddler crabs have clear scales over their eyes, but they do not have eye lids that move like we do.
The idiom is referencing a snake -- when they shed skin, the scales over their eyes turn cloudy and they can't see well until it sheds off. When the scales fall off, their vision returns. When the scales fall from your eyes, suddenly you see the truth.
Snakes sleep with their eyes open because they dont have any eyelids. Their eyes are covered by a clear scale called a spectacle. You can see this when your snake sheds its skin. Some scientists believe that snakes went through a period in their evolution when they were underground and lost their eyes compeletly. That may be why snake eyes have a very different structure than any other kind of animal. they dont have eyelids..but they still sleep..you can tell by looking at the eye..if its like a very thin line in the middle..they're asleep.. make sure u wake them up 1st by tapping the cage before picking it up..they get aggresive when u shock themBecause the have no closable eye-lids. They have a clear lens over the eye-ball - called the 'brille'
yes it is perfectly normal because their eyes and body clouds over then their eyes go back to normal then will shed up to a week after the eyes go clear. :)
yes they do but it hurts them. If I came over to yourhouse and ripped out some of your hair it would grow back right? It would just hurt... alot. same with snakes
i for one am glad you asked that question, those hard pieces of skin are called scales, the scales are what cover the bodies of reptiles and fish, including whales and sharks, with fish they are mainly a water repellent used so that they can swim faster, on reptiles they are what obsorbes heat so that they can live, snakes though, unlike the majority of other reptiles shed the scales because the scales don't grown, nor do they stretch, so when the snake grows too large for the scales it finds a rock or branch to scrape its body against so that the scales will fall off, they even shed over their eyes and those whole on the sides of their heads what i believe are called "diapsids" pronounced "dye-ap-sids"
It is estimated to be over 100,000 snakes
